  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Pinch of nutmeg (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, spices, and salt.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then add buttermilk and vanilla extract to create a velvety batter.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.
  6. Divide the batter evenly between prepared pans.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting, beat together softened butter and powdered sugar until smooth, then mix in eggnog and vanilla.
  10. Frost cooled cake layers and sprinkle with a pinch of nutmeg.
